Owen Cooper Opens Up About ‘Adolescence’ Role, Calls School Screenings “My Worst Nightmare”

Netflix’s critically acclaimed British miniseries sheds light on the dark side of the digital world—and its young star isn’t rushing to rewatch it.

Netflix’s Adolescence has emerged as one of the platform’s most hard-hitting dramas of the year, with its raw portrayal of a teenager navigating a world shaped by online influences and real-life tragedy. Co-created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, the four-part British series follows 13-year-old Jamie Miller, played by rising actor Owen Cooper, who becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a classmate.

A Bold Performance the Star Hasn’t Watched

Despite the widespread praise for his powerful performance, Owen Cooper recently admitted that he hasn’t brought himself to watch the series in full. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the young actor confessed,
“I still haven’t watched it either. I just don’t like watching myself.”

But what really unsettles Cooper? The idea that the show is now being screened in schools as part of classroom discussions.
“That’s my worst nightmare,” he joked, highlighting how strange and intense it feels to know classmates and peers might be analyzing his work in an educational setting.

A Cautionary Tale of the Digital Age

Adolescence pulls no punches in its depiction of how digital platforms and social media can influence young minds. Each episode is uniquely shot in a single continuous take, adding a layer of intimacy and intensity to the narrative.

Cooper admitted that filming the show opened his eyes to online dangers he hadn’t previously been aware of.
“I was glad I didn’t have any idea of what was going on — the emojis and the meanings behind them. I had no clue,” he said.
The actor added that even his friends were unaware of the deeper online culture portrayed in the show — underscoring how these realities are quietly unfolding across the UK.

A Breakthrough Series with Classroom Impact

Stephen Graham, who not only co-created the show but also plays Jamie’s father, Eddie Miller, has been instrumental in bringing this story to life. Since its release on March 13, Adolescence has sparked conversations about teenage mental health, digital literacy, and the hidden pressures faced by young boys.

Though Netflix hasn’t yet confirmed a second season, the show’s impact suggests this won’t be the last we hear from Adolescence — or Owen Cooper.

For now, though, the young star seems content letting others watch the drama unfold — while he stays far from the screen.
