Their homecoming party turns into a nightmare when vampires descend upon their small town. Newcomer Miles Caton plays Sammie, a preacher’s son whose blues music becomes a weapon against the supernatural.
The ‘Grilled Cheese’ Secret
Behind the scenes, Coogler relied on his tight-knit creative family, dubbing the project Grilled Cheese. Oscar winners like composer Ludwig Göransson, costume designer Ruth E. Carter, and Black Panther cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw reunited to bring this Southern Gothic horror to life. “We know people are comfortable in our kitchen,” Coogler quipped.
The Showstopping Juke Joint Scene
One sequence, teased in trailers, sees Sammie’s music “piercing the veil between life and death,” igniting the juke joint in a surreal, fiery spectacle. Instead of CGI, Coogler opted for old-school rehearsals, live scoring, and real musicians to capture raw energy. “That’s what people will talk about,” producer Sev Ohanian promised.
Why Vampires? Why Now?
Coogler’s inspiration came from blues music, particularly Wang Dang Doodle, a song about a raucous party. “I wanted to show Black joy in the 1930s, not just struggle,” he explained. The vampires, he added, symbolize deeper threats—greed, betrayal, and the erosion of community.
